Kit SSB85 for Smart 600cc petrol: the first kit made by SAITO, the first turbo kit, complete with all components, marketed in Italy!

The SSB85 Kit was created in the year 2000 specifically for the Smart 600 cc petrol, the kit has been the result of the cooperation between Benelli Telai of Fermignano and SAITO of Osimo, and it is aimed to provide at a reasonable price a complete turbo kit to reach a power of about 90hp with a high torque at an adequate number of revolutions (12 Kgm between 4000 and 4500 engine revolutions) and a considerable reliability.

It was the first complete, plug&play Kit made by SAITO with the aim of deiliver a product that gives great satisfaction to those who use the car for sports use without losing the basic characteristics of the car so low consumption and reliability. The 6 months spent on the development and the 4 cars set up allowed the achievement of the objective even surpassing the best expectations, projecting SAITO into the tuning sector.

The study related to the engine-turbine matching was carried out by SAITO, distributor of the Mitsubishi turbocharger in Italy, following a specific philosophy: 1) increase in compressed air flow rates; 2) reduction of exhaust back pressures; 3) increase of the resistance of the turbo and of the exhaust manifold (Achilles’ heel of the Smart) in order resist to the stress.

In order to satisfy the first theme, the suction geometry has been increased using a compression impeller larger than the original. To obtain a good performance with high pressures, a “split blades” type impeller (different blade height) has been selected with a 30° angle. For the reduction of back pressure, a 2.8 square centimeters turbine crank initially was selected this produced a considerable torque but did not allow the desired power to be obtained so it was changed to 3.3 square centimeters coupled to with an impeller of the 025 type Large with high gas disposal. With this new version the torque – power compromise was very satisfying. In order to further improve performance, a new cast-iron exhaust manifold has been designed where the ducts have been optimized according to the burst sequence of the small 3-cylinder engine. Together with the manifold, a single output exhaust catalyzed in stainless steel with high permeability has been realized, capable of supplying an additional 3 CV. The Mitsubishi turbocharger as been chosen for its remarkable reliability. The thrust bearing is in fact capable of withstanding high axial loads as its 360 ° conformation allows a correct distribution of loads avoiding the phenomenon of oil film breaking on the reaction tracks in the presence of high supercharging pressures and turbo regimes very high (over 210,000 revolutions per minute). The “Pop Off” recirculation valve has not been deliberately used in order to better exploit the shock wave of the compressor following a detached and consequent sudden re-opening of the gas. This system is very common in CIVT type track cars. The result is a remarkable ability at the cue with a slight noise at the moment of closing the butterfly.

The low cost of the kit was obtained by industrializing all the components of which most of the production equipment was needed (see exhaust manifold, muffler, oil pipes).
